Have you ever been so exhausted that you could barely think straight — yet the moment your head hit the pillow, your mind switched on like a light?
That’s not a contradiction. That’s stress.
I’m Maree-Nicole, a Clinical Hypnotherapist and Psychotherapist, and if there’s one thing I see more than anything else in my practice, it’s this: capable, high-functioning people who are running on empty and can’t work out why they can’t just switch off. They’ve tried early nights. They’ve tried holidays. They’ve tried telling themselves to relax — which, as you may have noticed, has never once worked in the history of stress.
Here’s what I want you to understand: you can’t think your way out of stress, because stress doesn’t live in your thoughts. It lives in your nervous system. And that’s exactly why hypnotherapy for stress works when willpower doesn’t.
What stress actually does to your body
Your nervous system has two main settings. One is for action — the fight-or-flight response that floods your body with adrenaline and cortisol so you can meet a threat. The other is for rest — the state where your body digests, repairs, and recovers.
Both are healthy. The problem is never stress itself — it’s getting stuck in the action setting.
Modern life gives your body a threat signal that never ends: the inbox, the mortgage, the school run, the phone that never stops. Your nervous system can’t tell the difference between a deadline and a danger. So it keeps you switched “on” — day after day, month after month — until “on” becomes the only setting you know.
That’s when you start noticing things like:
- Waking up tired no matter how long you slept
- A jaw that’s always clenched, shoulders that live up near your ears
- Snapping at people you love over small things
- Racing thoughts the moment things go quiet
- Getting sick the second you finally take a break
- Feeling “wired and tired” — flat and buzzing at the same time
- Reaching for wine, food, or scrolling just to feel some relief
If you recognised yourself in that list, please hear this: nothing is wrong with you. Your body is doing exactly what it was designed to do. It’s just been asked to do it for far too long — and it has forgotten how to come back down.
Why you can’t “just relax”
By the time most of my clients reach me, they’ve been told to relax so many times they could scream. And they’ve genuinely tried. The problem is that relaxation isn’t a decision — it’s a physiological state, and the part of your brain that controls it isn’t the part that speaks in words.
Your conscious mind — the thinking, planning, to-do-list part — is not the part holding the stress. The stress response is run by your subconscious, the deeper part of the mind that manages your body automatically: your heartbeat, your breathing, your tension, your alarm system.
So when you tell yourself to calm down, you’re sending a memo to a department that doesn’t read memos.
This is where hypnotherapy is different. Instead of trying to talk the conscious mind into relaxing, hypnotherapy works directly with the subconscious — the part that actually holds the switch.
How hypnotherapy for stress works
Hypnosis is not what the movies have sold you. There’s no swinging watch, no losing control, no clucking like a chicken. In a session, you’re aware the whole time — it simply feels like a deep, guided state of calm, a little like that drifting feeling just before sleep.
What makes that state so powerful for stress is twofold.
First, the state itself is the medicine. Hypnosis guides your nervous system out of fight-or-flight and into the rest-and-repair state — often for the first time in months or years. Many of my clients tell me their first session was the calmest they can remember feeling in years. For a nervous system that’s forgotten what “off” feels like, that experience alone begins the retraining.
Second, we change what’s driving the stress. Deep relaxation on its own is lovely, but if we stopped there, the old patterns would rebuild. So while your subconscious is open and receptive, we work on the roots — the beliefs and automatic patterns that keep your system stuck on high alert. Things like I have to hold everything together. If I stop, everything falls apart. Rest is lazy. Everyone needs me. Sound familiar? These aren’t personality traits. They’re learned patterns — and what was learned can be unlearned.
In my practice I combine hypnotherapy with breathwork and nervous system regulation techniques — the same approach I teach in my Mind Over Matter wellness sessions — so you don’t just feel calm in my chair. You leave with tools your body remembers, ways to bring yourself down from overwhelm in the middle of a real Tuesday, not just in a session.
What a session with me looks like
Every client is different, but stress work generally moves through three stages:
Calming the system. We use hypnosis and breathwork to give your nervous system the experience of genuine rest — teaching your body that the “off” switch still exists.
Finding the drivers. Together we uncover your particular stress patterns — the pressure you put on yourself, the situations that flip your switch, the old beliefs about what you have to carry.
Rewiring the response. Using hypnotherapy, we install new automatic responses — so that the things that used to send you into overdrive start rolling off you instead. Clients often describe it as “the volume being turned down” on life.
Stress rarely travels alone, and if yours comes with a busy, worried mind, you may also want to read my post on Does Hypnotherapy Work for Anxiety? — anxiety and stress are close cousins, but they’re not the same, and the work is slightly different for each. Stress also loves to show up around performance and pressure — if speaking up at work or presenting sets yours off, I’ve written about that too in hypnotherapy for public speaking.
Who this is for
Hypnotherapy for stress is for you if:
- You’re functioning on the outside but running on fumes underneath
- You can’t remember the last time you felt genuinely relaxed
- Your body is starting to send you louder signals — poor sleep, tension, headaches, a short fuse
- You’ve tried “managing” your stress with logic, apps, and discipline, and it hasn’t reached the root
- You’re tired of coping and ready for actual change
I work with clients across Sydney and Australia-wide via Zoom — and yes, hypnotherapy works beautifully online. Your nervous system doesn’t need to be in my room to learn how to come home to calm. Some of my most stressed clients do their sessions from the one quiet corner of their own house, and honestly, there’s something fitting about learning to switch off in the very place you live.
You weren’t built to run on empty
Stress convinces you that pushing through is the only option — that everyone else is coping, that you just need to try harder, that rest is something you’ll earn later. But later never comes on its own. At some point, the coming-down has to be chosen. And sometimes it has to be relearned, gently, with help.
That’s the work I do. Not teaching you to tolerate more — teaching your body that it’s safe to stop.
If you’re ready to find your off switch again, let’s talk. I offer a free 30-minute consultation where we can look at what’s driving your stress and whether hypnotherapy is the right fit for you — no pressure, no obligation, just a conversation.
